Even the food that each person prefers is of three kinds. So too are sacrifice, austerity and giving. Listen now to the distinctions among them.
Explanation
Krishna answers Arjuna's question about how faith shows itself in different people. Here he begins to apply the three qualities of nature (guṇa), which are clarity (sattva), restless passion (rajas) and dullness (tamas), to everyday choices. He starts with food (āhāra), then sacrifice (yajña), austerity (tapas) and giving (dāna). The next verses take each in turn.
