वेदाहं समतीतानि वर्तमानानि चार्जुन ।भविष्याणि च भूतानि मां तु वेद न कश्चन ॥
vedāhaṃ samatītāni vartamānāni cārjuna |bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni māṃ tu veda na kaścana ||
I know the beings of the past, those of the present, and those yet to come, O Arjuna. But no one truly knows me.
Explanation
Krishna has just said that his divine power of illusion (yogamāyā) veils him from most people. Here he contrasts his knowledge of all beings across past, present and future with the fact that hardly anyone knows him. The word 'no one' (na kaścana) is usually read as 'almost no one', since the next verses and 7.19 speak of rare devotees who do know him.
