Then that state must be sought, going to which people do not return again. “I take refuge in that very primal Person, from whom this ancient stream of activity has flowed forth.”
Explanation
Krishna has just described the world as a tree with deep roots, to be cut down with the strong weapon of non-attachment (asaṅga). Once that is done, he says, the seeker should look for the highest state (padam), from which there is no return to rebirth. The words “I take refuge” (prapadye) are read by some commentators as the seeker's own vow, and by others as an instruction to surrender to the primal Person (puruṣa), the source of the world's long-running activity (pravṛtti).
