Fire, light, daytime, the bright fortnight, the six months of the sun's northern course: departing in these, people who know Brahman go to Brahman.
Explanation
Krishna begins describing the first of the two times of departure he promised to explain in the previous verse, the 'bright path' (the path of light). Fire, light, day, the waxing moon and the sun's northward course (uttarāyaṇa) are named, and those who know Brahman (brahmavid), the ultimate reality, go to it by this route. Some commentators take these words as literal times, others as presiding deities or stages of the path; the verse itself does not settle this.
