antakāle ca māmeva smaranmuktvā kalevaram |yaḥ prayāti sa madbhāvaṃ yāti nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ ||
At the time of death, whoever leaves the body remembering me alone goes to my state of being. There is no doubt about this.
Explanation
Krishna has just explained how he is present in the body and in all things, and now he turns to the moment of death, answering Arjuna's question about how he can be known at the end. Anyone who dies remembering Krishna alone attains his state of being (mad-bhāva), which is union with him. Traditions differ on what this state is: some read it as merging into the divine, others as entering Krishna's own realm and nature.
