Whoever remembers the Seer, the ancient one, the ruler, smaller than the smallest, the sustainer of everything, whose form is beyond thought, shining like the sun, beyond the darkness…
Explanation
Krishna is telling Arjuna how to hold the Supreme in mind, especially at the time of death. He describes it as all-knowing (kavi), the ancient ruler, subtler than the subtlest, the sustainer of all, and radiant like the sun beyond darkness (tamas), meaning ignorance. The sentence continues into the next verse, which says what such a person attains. Non-dualist readers take this as the formless Brahman described through the Lord, while devotional traditions read it as the personal God, Krishna or Vishnu.
