In the beginning, having created beings together with sacrifice, Prajapati said: “By this you shall multiply. Let this be the cow that yields to you all you desire.”
Explanation
Krishna continues explaining why action offered as sacrifice (yajña) matters, by pointing to a story of creation: Prajapati, the creator and lord of beings, gave humans sacrifice as the way to flourish and meet their needs. The wish-yielding cow (kāmadhuk) is an image for how duty done in the spirit of offering gives people what they truly need. Traditions differ on whether yajña here means Vedic ritual or any selfless, dutiful action. Prajapati's speech continues in the next verse.
