As fire is covered by smoke, as a mirror by dust, and as an embryo by its membrane, so this is covered by that.
Explanation
Krishna has just named desire (kāma) as the enemy, born of rajas, the restless guna of passion. Here he gives three images of how it covers over something: smoke hides fire, dust dims a mirror, and a membrane wraps an embryo. In the next verse, 'this' is made clear as knowledge (jñāna), which desire veils, and the three images suggest different degrees of covering.
