अनाश्रितः कर्मफलं कार्यं कर्म करोति यः ।स संन्यासी च योगी च न निरग्निर्न चाक्रियः ॥
anāśritaḥ karmaphalaṃ kāryaṃ karma karoti yaḥ |sa saṃnyāsī ca yogī ca na niragnirna cākriyaḥ ||
One who does the work that ought to be done, without depending on its fruit, is both a renunciate and a yogi — not the one who merely keeps no sacred fire, nor the one who simply does no action.
Explanation
Krishna is continuing his teaching to Arjuna on how to act. He says true renunciation (saṃnyāsa) and yoga (discipline of the mind) lie in doing one's rightful duty (kārya karma) without relying on its results (karmaphala). Merely giving up the ritual fire (agni) or giving up action is not enough. Traditions differ on whether the 'fireless' and 'actionless' refer to specific ascetic orders or to outward renunciation in general.
