There are two kinds of created beings in this world: the divine and the demonic. The divine has been described at length. Now hear from me about the demonic, O Partha.
Explanation
Krishna has just reassured Arjuna that he is born with divine qualities. Here he introduces a contrast: human beings fall into two broad types, the divine (daiva) and the demonic (āsura), meaning those whose natures lean toward virtue or away from it. Having covered the divine qualities earlier in the chapter, he now turns to the demonic. Traditions generally read these as two tendencies of character, not two fixed species of people.
