प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः ।न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते ॥
pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca janā na vidurāsurāḥ |na śaucaṃ nāpi cācāro na satyaṃ teṣu vidyate ||
People of demonic nature do not know what to engage in or what to turn away from. Neither purity, nor good conduct, nor truthfulness is found in them.
Explanation
Krishna has just said he will describe the demonic (āsura) type of person, and here he begins. Such people cannot tell what is right to pursue (pravṛtti, engagement) from what is right to give up (nivṛtti, restraint), and they lack purity (śauca), good conduct (ācāra) and truth (satya). Traditions broadly agree that this describes a mindset driven by desire rather than a fixed class of people.
