न काङ्क्षे विजयं कृष्ण न च राज्यं सुखानि च ।किं नो राज्येन गोविन्द किं भोगैर्जीवितेन वा ॥
na kāṅkṣe vijayaṃ kṛṣṇa na ca rājyaṃ sukhāni ca |kiṃ no rājyena govinda kiṃ bhogairjīvitena vā ||
I do not desire victory, Krishna, nor kingdom, nor pleasures. What use is a kingdom to us, O Govinda? What use are enjoyments, or even life itself?
Explanation
Arjuna, seeing his relatives arrayed on the battlefield, is overcome with doubt and says that the usual rewards of war have lost their meaning for him. He addresses Krishna as Govinda, a name traditionally explained as 'protector of cows', and asks what victory, kingdom, pleasure (sukha) or even life is worth if gained by killing his own people.
