बहूनि मे व्यतीतानि जन्मानि तव चार्जुन ।तान्यहं वेद सर्वाणि न त्वं वेत्थ परन्तप ॥
bahūni me vyatītāni janmāni tava cārjuna |tānyahaṃ veda sarvāṇi na tvaṃ vettha parantapa ||
Many births of mine have passed, and of yours too, Arjuna. I know them all, but you do not, O scorcher of foes.
Explanation
Arjuna had just asked how Krishna could have taught this yoga to Vivasvan, the sun god, long ago, since Krishna was born much later. Krishna answers that both of them have lived many lives, but only he remembers them all, while Arjuna's memory of past births is veiled. "Parantapa" (paraṃtapa), meaning "scorcher of foes," is an epithet of Arjuna.
