Actions do not bind a person who has renounced action through yoga, whose doubts have been cut away by knowledge, and who is established in the self, O Dhananjaya.
Explanation
Krishna is speaking to Arjuna, rounding off his teaching on action and knowledge, just after warning that doubt destroys a person. Here he describes the freed person: one who has set action aside through yoga, whose doubts are cut by knowledge (jñāna), and who is grounded in the self (ātman). Such a person still acts, but action no longer binds them. Traditions differ on whether this 'renunciation' is of attachment to the results of action, as in the karma-yoga reading, or of action itself, as in the Advaita reading.
