Whatever being comes into existence, whether moving or unmoving, know that it arises from the union of the field and the knower of the field, O best of the Bharatas.
Explanation
Krishna is continuing his teaching on the field (kṣetra), meaning the body and nature, and the knower of the field (kṣetrajña), the conscious self that knows it. He says that every living thing, moving or still, comes about through the union of these two. Traditions differ on the nature of this union: Advaita sees it as an apparent mixing of the self with nature through ignorance, while theistic schools see it as a real relation in which both depend on God.
