अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थितः ।अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च ॥
ahamātmā guḍākeśa sarvabhūtāśayasthitaḥ |ahamādiśca madhyaṃ ca bhūtānāmanta eva ca ||
I am the Self, O Gudakesha, seated in the heart of every being. I am the beginning, the middle, and also the end of all beings.
Explanation
Krishna has just promised to describe his divine manifestations (vibhūti), and he begins with the most intimate one: the Self (ātman) dwelling in the heart of every living being. He then says he is the origin, the middle and the end of all beings, meaning that creation, continuance and dissolution all rest in him. Gudakesha is a name for Arjuna, often read as 'conqueror of sleep' or 'thick-haired'.
