I am the father of this world, its mother, its supporter, and its grandfather. I am the one to be known, the purifier, the syllable Om, and also the Rig, the Sama and the Yajur Vedas.
Explanation
Continuing his description of how everything in creation is rooted in him, Krishna tells Arjuna that he is the parent, sustainer and ancestor of the world. He is also what sacred knowledge aims at (the one to be known), the purifier, the sacred syllable Om (oṃkāra), and the three Vedas. Traditions differ on emphasis: non-dualist readings take this as Krishna being the one Brahman behind all things, while devotional readings stress his personal relationship to the world as a loving parent.
