Those devoted to the gods go to the gods; those devoted to the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship spirits go to the spirits; and those who worship me come to me.
Explanation
Krishna has just said that people who do not truly know him as the Lord of all offerings fall back into rebirth. Here he explains that each person reaches whatever they devote themselves to: gods, ancestors (pitṛs), or spirits (bhūtas). Only those who worship him reach him. Commentators differ on whether the gods and ancestors are lesser, temporary goals or also forms of him, but all agree that the object of devotion shapes the destination.
