Contacts of the senses with their objects, O son of Kunti, bring cold and heat, pleasure and pain. They come and go and do not last. Endure them, O descendant of Bharata.
Explanation
Krishna is speaking to Arjuna, who is overwhelmed by grief and doubt before the battle. He says that experiences from sense contact (mātrā-sparśa), such as cold, heat, pleasure and pain, are temporary, so Arjuna should patiently bear them instead of being ruled by them. Traditions agree on the call to endurance (titikṣā); Advaita readers stress the unreality of these changing experiences, while devotional and other schools stress steady duty and equanimity.
