antavanta ime dehā nityasyoktāḥ śarīriṇaḥ |anāśino'prameyasya tasmādyudhyasva bhārata ||
These bodies of the eternal, indestructible, immeasurable embodied one are said to come to an end. Therefore, fight, O descendant of Bharata.
Explanation
Krishna continues his teaching to Arjuna, who is reluctant to fight. He distinguishes the body, which is finite, from the embodied self (śarīrin, the one who inhabits the body), which is eternal and beyond measure, so grief over death is misplaced. On this basis he urges Arjuna to fulfil his duty and fight; traditions differ on whether this is chiefly a call to duty (dharma) or a pointer toward self-knowledge, and many read it as both.
