The Vedas have the three gunas as their domain. Rise above the three gunas, Arjuna. Be free of the pairs of opposites, ever steady in clarity (sattva), unconcerned with acquiring and keeping, and established in the Self.
Explanation
Krishna has just criticised those who cling to flowery Vedic promises of pleasure and power. Here he tells Arjuna to go beyond the three gunas (guṇa, the qualities of nature: sattva, rajas and tamas), beyond opposites like pleasure and pain (dvandva), and beyond worry about gaining and keeping things (yogakṣema). Commentators differ on whether this criticises the ritual portion of the Vedas or only the outlook of those who use it for worldly gain.
