इन्द्रियाणां हि चरतां यन्मनोऽनुविधीयते ।तदस्य हरति प्रज्ञां वायुर्नावमिवाम्भसि ॥
indriyāṇāṃ hi caratāṃ yanmano'nuvidhīyate |tadasya harati prajñāṃ vāyurnāvamivāmbhasi ||
For when the mind runs after the wandering senses, it carries off a person's discernment, as a wind carries off a boat on the water.
Explanation
Krishna is explaining to Arjuna why an undisciplined person finds no peace. When the mind follows the senses as they roam among their objects, it sweeps away wise discernment (prajñā), just as a strong wind pushes a boat off its course. The image leads into the next verse, where steady wisdom comes from restraining the senses.
