Weapons do not cut this self, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it, and wind does not dry it.
Explanation
Krishna is comforting a grief-stricken Arjuna by describing the self (ātman), the inner being that moves from body to body, as in the previous verse. Here he says that weapons, fire, water and wind cannot harm it. The self is not a physical thing, so physical forces cannot destroy it. Traditions differ on the self's final relation to the divine, but all read this verse as affirming its indestructibility.
