न त्वेवाहं जातु नासं न त्वं नेमे जनाधिपाः ।न चैव न भविष्यामः सर्वे वयमतः परम् ॥
na tvevāhaṃ jātu nāsaṃ na tvaṃ neme janādhipāḥ |na caiva na bhaviṣyāmaḥ sarve vayamataḥ param ||
There was never a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor these rulers of men. And there will never be a time after this when any of us will cease to be.
Explanation
Krishna continues his teaching to Arjuna, who is overcome with grief at the thought of killing his kinsmen. Having said that the wise do not grieve, he now says that he himself, Arjuna and the assembled kings have always existed and will always exist. Traditions differ on the plurality implied here: Advaita takes the distinction among selves as true only from the standpoint of ordinary experience, while Dvaita and Vishishtadvaita take it as lasting and real.
