bhogaiśvaryaprasaktānāṃ tayāpahṛtacetasām |vyavasāyātmikā buddhiḥ samādhau na vidhīyate ||
For those who cling to pleasure and power, and whose minds are carried away by such words, the resolute intellect is not established in deep absorption (samadhi).
Explanation
Krishna is continuing his criticism of those who follow only the flowery words of ritual that promise heaven, pleasure and power (the previous verse). Their minds are carried away by that speech and they cling to its promises, so the firm, single-pointed resolve (vyavasāya-buddhi) needed for deep meditative absorption (samādhi) does not arise in them. Some commentators take samādhi here as the steady mind fixed on the Self or God, others as the mind's inner composure more generally.
