संन्यासस्य महाबाहो तत्त्वमिच्छामि वेदितुम् ।त्यागस्य च हृषीकेश पृथक्केशिनिषूदन ॥
saṃnyāsasya mahābāho tattvamicchāmi veditum |tyāgasya ca hṛṣīkeśa pṛthakkeśiniṣūdana ||
O mighty-armed one, I want to understand the true nature of renunciation (sannyasa), and of relinquishment (tyaga) too, O Hrishikesha, O slayer of Keshi, each one separately.
Explanation
Arjuna opens the final chapter with a question. Throughout the Gita Krishna has praised both giving up action and acting without attachment, so Arjuna asks what renunciation (saṃnyāsa) really is and how it differs from relinquishment (tyāga). The next verse begins Krishna's answer, and later verses refine the distinction.
