त्याज्यं दोषवदित्येके कर्म प्राहुर्मनीषिणः ।यज्ञदानतपःकर्म न त्याज्यमिति चापरे ॥
tyājyaṃ doṣavadityeke karma prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ |yajñadānatapaḥkarma na tyājyamiti cāpare ||
Some wise thinkers say that action should be given up, since it is flawed; others say that acts of sacrifice, giving and austerity should not be given up.
Explanation
Krishna is answering Arjuna's question about the difference between renunciation (saṃnyāsa) and relinquishment (tyāga). Here he lists the views of thinkers: one group says all action is tainted, like a fault (doṣa), and must be abandoned; another says sacrifice (yajña), giving (dāna) and austerity (tapas) must be kept. He is setting out the debate before giving his own conclusion in the next verse.
