The seat of action, the doer, the various kinds of instruments, the many separate kinds of effort, and, fifth among them, destiny.
Explanation
Krishna is naming the five factors behind any action, which he introduced in the previous verse as taught in Sankhya. They are the base or body (adhiṣṭhāna), the doer (kartṛ), the instruments such as the senses (karaṇa), the different efforts (ceṣṭā), and destiny (daiva). Commentators differ on daiva: some take it as the unseen force of past karma or fate, others as the divine powers presiding over the senses.
