अनिष्टमिष्टं मिश्रं च त्रिविधं कर्मणः फलम् ।भवत्यत्यागिनां प्रेत्य न तु संन्यासिनां क्वचित् ॥
aniṣṭamiṣṭaṃ miśraṃ ca trividhaṃ karmaṇaḥ phalam |bhavatyatyāgināṃ pretya na tu saṃnyāsināṃ kvacit ||
Unwanted, wanted, and mixed: the fruit of action is threefold. It comes after death to those who have not renounced, but never to those who have renounced.
Explanation
Krishna continues his teaching on renunciation (tyāga) and relinquishment (saṃnyāsa). Here he says that action bears three kinds of results: undesirable, desirable and mixed. Those who stay attached to results (phala) receive them, while those who have given up that attachment are not bound by them. Traditions differ on whether "after death" (pretya) refers to rebirth or simply to results coming later, and they also differ on whether "saṃnyāsin" here means a formal renouncer or anyone who gives up the fruit of action.
